Located in the São Paulo area, the Old Hospital of Góis is integrated into the urban fabric of the town of Góis, in the heart of the municipality of the same name. Its position offers visitors a direct perspective on the history and evolution of this town, remaining a visible landmark within its geographical setting.
Founded in the mid-16th century, specifically in 1555, the Old Hospital of Góis was an initiative of D. Diogo da Silveira, then Lord of Góis. From its inception, this institution was dedicated to sheltering pilgrims and people in need, offering them both spiritual support and medical assistance. Over time, the hospital gained a reputation for treating syphilis, using water from the Fonte do Pombal, which was believed to possess beneficial properties for that purpose. Throughout the centuries, before its definitive closure in 1834, the hospital achieved considerable national prominence, reflecting the importance of its welfare role at the time.
The premises of the Old Hospital of Góis were acquired by the Municipality in 2003, with the aim of creating a future museum space there. As part of this intention, archaeological interventions were carried out, bringing to light fascinating details about the site's past. Excavations revealed traces of ancient structures, such as masonry wells and a water channel, and indications of the old clock tower that was part of the complex. The discovered artifacts are vast and diverse, including ceramic fragments from different eras, metal objects, glass, and even coins, as well as pieces linked to religious worship, such as a possible sacred vessel. These discoveries today allow us to glimpse the richness of daily and religious life that once filled this space.
The building of the Old Hospital of Góis itself is a testament to its long history and evolution. Through the analysis of its walls, archaeologists identified various construction techniques employed over the centuries, from robust 16th-century stone masonry to the use of brick and adobe in later periods, as well as different types of wattle and daub. This constructive diversity reveals the various phases of occupation and restructuring of the architectural complex, extending approximately between the 16th and 20th centuries. Integrated into its original structure were a chapel, a vast courtyard that once served as a garden for the old Paços Velhos, and where the town's clock tower stood, elements that underscore the complexity and multifunctionality of this historical site.
