The Colina de Camões Amphitheatre is located in a singular area of the city of Coimbra, more precisely in the Quinta da Várzea zone, integrated within the grounds of the historic Quinta das Lágrimas. Its elevated position, on a hill, allows for a comprehensive view over Coimbra's urban landscape, offering a distinct perspective and privileged contact with the surrounding nature. Access to the site places the visitor in an environment of great tranquility, away from the city's urban bustle.
This amphitheatre was conceived with a deep consideration for the natural characteristics of the site. Taking advantage of a hill about 20 meters high, its structure harmoniously merges with the terrain. A distinctive element is the round lake, 18 meters in diameter, whose thick stone lining evokes local tradition. This lake is gravity-fed by water from a centuries-old spring and functions as a natural mirror, reflecting the sky, the centenary trees, and the amphitheatre's own seating. The water, after filling the lake, continues its course, demonstrating exemplary ecological integration.
From the Colina de Camões Amphitheatre, the visitor enjoys a singular panorama over the city of Coimbra. The view extends across the landscape, providing a privileged observation point. The surroundings are marked by a woodland and old-style gardens, which lend the space an atmosphere of peace and serenity. This is a place that invites quietude and contemplation, where one can appreciate the fusion between landscape architecture and nature in its pure state.
The originality of the Colina de Camões Amphitheatre lies in its conception, which highlights the interaction between light, shadow, and natural elements. The landscape architect Cristina Castel-Branco designed the seating and stage so that the contrast between the light stone and the shadows projected onto the grass creates a dynamic visual effect throughout the day, varying according to the sun's position. This approach, which underlines the presence of natural processes, earned the project the National Landscape Architecture Award in 2008, in the Private Gardens category, attesting to its excellence and the singularity of its aesthetic proposal.
