Situated in the southern part of the village of Ançã, the Chapel of São Sebastião serenely integrates into the urban environment. The low-rise housing characteristic of the local streets seems to radiate from the area where the chapel is located, lending the place a welcoming and typically Portuguese atmosphere.
The chapel features a religious style dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, with elements of Renaissance architecture. Its front porch stands out, a common feature in the region, with six stone pillars resting on a parapet. The main facade, facing west, is topped by a triangular pediment. Next to the main entrance, inviting stone benches offer a place for rest, while the bell tower, elegantly placed in the upper left corner, completes the exterior ensemble.
Upon entering the chapel, one discovers a distinct interior space, divided by an arch leading to the rectangular chancel. The central element is a polychrome stone altarpiece, composed of three niches. In it, the figure of Saint Sebastian, the patron saint, occupies the central place, flanked by the images of Saint John and Saint Catherine, the latter dating from the 16th century. In the nave, there is also a cylindrical stone pulpit, resting on a column, a detail that enriches the devotional atmosphere. The chapel has strategic openings for the passage of natural light and air circulation, giving it a pleasant atmosphere.
The Chapel of São Sebastião is a testament to faith and community resilience. Although it went through periods of lesser care, especially in the mid-20th century, it was the local population itself that, through joint efforts, ensured its recovery. The various renovations over the centuries, particularly in the 17th century and more recently in 1997, reflect the continuous commitment to preserving this place of worship. The chapel maintains its religious function, serving as a point of reference for the community of Ançã.
