The Roman Villa of Barros is located next to the village of Oledo, in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, situated on an elevation above the left bank of the Caniçada stream. The terrain has a slight slope, with sun exposure to the south and east, offering a peaceful panoramic view of the surrounding rural landscape.
Surrounded by fields and Mediterranean vegetation, the area still retains an agricultural character today, evoking the complex's original function. The immediate surroundings are dominated by scattered scrubland and olive groves, lending a serene atmosphere to the visitor.
This archaeological complex dates back to the Roman era and would have served as a center for agricultural exploitation. Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1997, the villa reflects the typical distribution of dwellings and support facilities for rural production during the imperial period.
Between 1990 and 1992, excavations were carried out that revealed the foundations of various constructions, delineating residential areas, storage facilities, and possible administrative spaces. These works confirmed the chronology and prolonged use of the site, reinforcing its status as a landmark of regional heritage.
On the ground, remnants of exterior granite walls and interior walls defining the arrangement of compartments are notable. At various points, threshold slabs corresponding to main entrances are still visible, as well as fragments of tegulae and baked clay pottery.
It is also possible to find perforated granite blocks, whose function remains uncertain, but which may have served in drainage systems or as supports for movable structures. The presence of these elements contributes to the interpretation of the villa's original design and the daily life of its occupants.
