The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia stands in the village that bears its name, Vila de Rei, serving as an important landmark in the seat of this municipality. Its central position in the locality contributes to its visibility and easy access, integrating harmoniously into the urban environment of the village. The chapel is also linked to the Fairground Park area, a vital space for the events and dynamics of the local community.
The history of this chapel has its roots in the community's desire in Vila de Rei to establish a Marian celebration that could attract not only the inhabitants of the region but also visitors from other places. The site where it stands today was previously occupied by a smaller chapel that threatened ruin. Faced with this reality, a group of Vila de Rei residents decided to undertake the construction of a new and larger temple.
Work began in 1897 and, after a few years of dedication, the new Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia was considered ready in 1902. Its official blessing and solemn inauguration, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese, D. Gaudêncio José Pereira, took place on September 5, 1903, marking a significant moment for the local community. Recently, the chapel has been the focus of attention, with restoration and improvement works, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia, known for its spaciousness, presents an interior that reflects the importance of faith and local art. Upon entering, one observes its three altars, each with its particular devotion. The main altar is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Guia, the patron saint of the temple. On the sides, two other altars stand out: one consecrated to Saint Anthony and another to Queen Saint Isabel.
Attention to detail is notable, such as the gilding work on the altars, which was completed a decade after the start of construction works. These elements give the space an atmosphere of contemplation and enhance the religious and cultural heritage of Vila de Rei, inviting a moment of tranquility and observation.
