This bridge over the Tagus River is located in the Portas de Ródão area, in the municipality of Vila Velha de Ródão. It connects the north bank, where Vila Velha de Ródão is situated, to the south bank, already in the municipality of Nisa. Its location is particularly striking, nestled in a natural landscape where the imposing rock formations of the Portas de Ródão stand out, shaping the river valley. Crossing the bridge offers panoramic views over this gorge and the waters of the Tagus, in an environment of great scenic beauty.

Architecture and Engineering

Inaugurated in 1888, this is a remarkable 19th-century engineering work. The main structure is a metallic deck about 167 meters long, supported by two central granite pillars. This architectural design reflects the construction methods of the era, combining the robustness of masonry with the lightness of iron. In 1996, the bridge underwent significant improvement works, which adapted the old roadways and created new, wider side walkways, specifically designed for pedestrian safety.

Historical Significance

The construction of this bridge, between 1881 and 1887, marked a fundamental change in regional communications. Before its construction, crossing the Tagus depended on more precarious solutions, and the bridge's inauguration consolidated a vital land connection. It represented a decisive step for local development, facilitating transport and commerce and reducing dependence on river navigation, which for centuries characterized the movement of goods and people in this area. The bridge is, therefore, a testament to the evolution of transport and how connections were established between the banks of the Tagus throughout history.
