In the heart of Atalaia do Campo, the pillory stands on Rua da Amoreira, on a slight slope of the terrain. Surrounded by traditional houses and a large tree, it stands out effortlessly in the urban landscape.
The three circular steps rest directly on the paving, blending with the public space and inviting a leisurely observation.
Associated with the granting of the charter by D. Manuel I on June 1, 1510, the pillory symbolizes the royal authority and judicial autonomy that the town then acquired. It also recalls the Roman presence and the medieval defensive function of the settlement.
On October 11, 1933, it was classified as a Property of Public Interest, preserving itself as a testament to the justice ceremonies and community life of past centuries.
Built in granite ashlar, it features a base of three circular steps leading to an octagonal shaft. The capital, in the form of a truncated pyramid, supports a cage of eight small columns that alternate between smooth and twisted surfaces.
The conical crowning exhibits several rings ornamented with intertwined motifs, evoking Manueline influences and lending a subtle decorative detail to the solidity of the ensemble.
Isolated on the thoroughfare axis, the monument offers an unobstructed perspective, without interference from modern elements. Its slightly sloping condition enhances the reading of each architectural element.
It is a serene spot where the granite, polished by time, contrasts with the vibrant green of the adjacent tree, creating a small refuge of history and tranquility.
