The Jewish Museum of Belmonte is located in the town of Belmonte, within the Beira Interior region. It is situated in the urban area of the village, a place that preserves a unique historical atmosphere, deeply connected to the long and complex history of its Jewish community.
This museum space is dedicated to telling the unusual history of the Jewish community of Belmonte and the region. Its remarkable resilience in the face of centuries of religious persecution is highlighted. The museum documents the trajectory of this community, which largely lived anonymously as Crypto-Jews, maintaining their traditions and identity in secret for generations, especially after the 15th century.
Inside the museum, one can find a vast collection of objects that belonged to Hebrew families from Beira Interior and Trás-os-Montes. More than a hundred pieces are exhibited, reflecting the daily life, religious practices, and professional activities of this community. Highlights include objects of daily and ritual use, as well as photographs that immortalize faces and moments of local history. The collection also includes a stone believed to have belonged to Belmonte's first synagogue, more than four hundred years old.
Inaugurated in 2005, the Jewish Museum of Belmonte was the first museum in Portugal entirely dedicated to the history of Judaism in the country. It is considered one of the best museums of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula. Its relevance was recognized internationally, having been named by the British newspaper Telegraph as one of the 50 best small museums in Europe, highlighting the importance of the history told and preserved here.
