The Sacred Art Museum of Castelo Branco is located in the central area of the city, within the urbanisation or area known as Sé and São Pedro. It is housed in the premises of the historic Convento da Graça (Convent of Grace), in a square that contributes to the ambiance of the surrounding area.
The building housing the museum has a long history linked to religious orders. Over the centuries, the Convento da Graça was home to different communities, including Franciscans, Augustinians, and Gracians. This passage through various orders left marks on the architecture and atmosphere of the space. After the extinction of religious orders in Portugal, the convent came under the responsibility of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Castelo Branco, which today oversees this heritage.
Inside the museum, visitors can discover a diverse and valuable collection of sacred art. The collection spans an extensive historical period, featuring pieces dating from the 16th to the 20th century. It is a remarkable ensemble that offers a perspective on the evolution of religious art over several centuries in the region.
The museum's collection is composed of a diversity of works. Visitors will find examples of sculpture, painting, liturgical textiles, altarware (objects used in worship), and ancient religious books. The pieces display a richness of detail, with different materials, forms, styles, and execution details, such as elaborate carvings and meticulous craftsmanship.
