The Wall of Penamacor Castle stands in a prominent position in the village of Penamacor, in the heart of Beira Baixa. Located in the Sé area, this ancient fortification occupies a rocky hill, offering visitors a wide perspective over the surrounding landscape. From there, it is possible to contemplate the panorama that extends across the region, framed by the natural scenery of Beira Interior Sul.
The walls of Penamacor Castle are a testament to the various stages of occupation and defense of the village throughout the centuries. Its history dates back to a period before the formation of Portugal, but it was with the donation of the territory to the Knights Templar, at the end of the 12th century, that the construction of the castle and the first defensive lines began. Subsequently, during the reign of D. Dinis, the complex was reinforced with the construction of a second ring of walls, which encompassed the village and the imposing keep. In the following centuries, the fortifications were adapted and expanded, notably in the 17th century, with the addition of bastions designed to resist the advances of artillery, the remains of which can still be glimpsed today.
From what was once a robust defensive system, several elements remain that invite careful discovery. The Keep stands out, which, although affected by accidents throughout history, still displays the royal arms of D. Manuel I, marking its 16th-century remodeling. Nearby, the Clock Tower, with its crenellated wall-walk and a bell tower at the top, is integrated into what remains of the old urban enclosure. It is also possible to observe sections of walls and 17th-century bastions, which reveal the complexity of military architecture. The Town Gate (Porta da Vila), an integral part of the old Town Hall (Paços do Concelho), constitutes another point of interest that illustrates how the defenses articulated with urban development.
This place, classified as a National Monument, does not offer only architectural remains; it is also a stage where history and popular imagination intertwine. Its walls and stones witnessed centuries of events, from the struggles of the Reconquista to the War of Restoration of Portuguese independence. It was here, within the village protected by these defenses, that in 1584, a few years after the tragic battle of Alcácer Quibir, the population allowed itself to be drawn into the belief in an impostor who posed as King D. Sebastião, an episode that reflects the depth of the hopes and myths of the time. To walk along the Wall of Penamacor Castle is, therefore, an opportunity to feel the pulse of the past and understand the strategic and cultural relevance that this mountain village has had throughout the ages.
