The Covilhã Public Garden is located within the urban fabric of the city, situated in the area of Covilhã and Canhoso. Its central location makes it a natural and accessible meeting point, offering a space for tranquility and conviviality in the heart of Covilhã.
The history of the Covilhã Public Garden is intrinsically linked to the city, rising on the ancient grounds of the conventual enclosure of the extinct Convent of São Francisco. This origin gives it a unique connection to Covilhã's religious and social past.
In the early 20th century, the garden served as a dynamic stage for community life. It was here that charity shows and the complementary festivities of the Feira de São Tiago (Saint James Fair) took place. Its bandstand, in particular, was a cultural meeting point where the local band performed regularly, enlivening weekends and summer evenings until the mid-century.
In 2001, the Public Garden underwent a remarkable requalification, aiming to improve its environment and functionality. This intervention resulted in larger green areas, perfect for rest and informal leisure.
Wooden paths meander through the garden, inviting tranquil strolls, and a renewed children's play area was created, designed for the youngest visitors. One of the most prominent features is the lighting installed at the base of the trees, highlighting the abundance of greenery and providing a welcoming and inviting atmosphere, particularly as natural light fades. Currently, all grassy areas are open for public use, inviting visitors to fully enjoy the space.
