Situated in the heart of Castelo Branco city, this garden occupies a central position in the urban landscape, offering a refuge of tranquility and beauty. Its layout allows for a privileged perspective on its complex design and, in certain points, glimpses of the locality's historic surroundings.
Conceived in the 18th century, by order of D. João de Mendonça, the then Bishop of Castelo Branco, this space is a remarkable testimony to baroque landscape art in Portugal. Its creation was intrinsically linked to the Old Episcopal Palace, of which it was an integral part, reflecting the opulence and aesthetic vision of the era.
The garden's design is a notable expression of the baroque style, characterized by its symmetry and the succession of terraces that unfold harmoniously. The meticulous topiary art, with its carefully sculpted boxwood labyrinths, creates geometric and scenic forms that guide the visitor's gaze. Aquatic elements, such as serene lakes and bubbling fountains, punctuate the space, adding a sonic and visual dimension that accentuates the atmosphere of freshness and vitality.
One of the most unique aspects of the garden is its impressive collection of statues, which lends the place a profound symbolic and narrative character. Prominently featured are the figures of the Kings of Portugal, arranged in a chronological sequence that narrates the nation's history, and allegorical representations of the Signs of the Zodiac. Additionally, visitors will find sculptures personifying the Virtues, the Seasons of the Year, the Continents, and the Apostles, each inviting contemplation and discovery.
