In the city of Covilhã, the Jardim das Artes is located in the Quinta da Arrepiada area, an expanding urban zone. It is contiguous to Rua Centro das Artes, which gives it a direct connection to the city's fabric. Its strategic location offers views over the Cova da Beira, naturally integrating it into the surrounding landscape.
The Jardim das Artes spans an area of approximately 18,000 m². Its design takes advantage of the natural fifteen-meter slope of the terrain, organizing it into distinct platforms. Oblique paths interlink these areas, allowing for fluid circulation without the need for major barriers. The materials chosen for its construction, such as granite present in some pavements and gutters, and ochre-toned surfaces, contribute to a sense of unity and visual coherence throughout the space. Three spiral metal pieces stand out in the landscape, visually connecting the platforms and creating a unified element when observed from the main entrance.
The dense tree planting is a striking feature of the garden, providing generous shade along paths and in resting areas. Different species were carefully selected for distinct purposes: a ring of sequoias frames the surrounding buildings, while an area of lime trees is envisioned as a space for outdoor exhibitions. Oleanders and rowan trees punctuate the paths with their color, and tulip trees and alders ensure freshness near the children's area and in other permanent spaces. Mountain trees, such as larch and birches, appear in clusters or alignments, and cedars, beeches, and magnolias mark the space, framing views of the landscape. The slopes are covered with natural flora from Serra da Estrela, which comes to life with its spring blooms.
This garden is a place dedicated to leisure and socializing, aiming to welcome all generations. It includes the largest playground in the municipality, designed with wooden equipment to harmonize with the surrounding natural environment. For extreme sports enthusiasts, there is a skate park. There is also an area dedicated to physical activities for adults. An extensive pedestrian path, 840 meters long, invites visitors to stroll and explore the various environments of the garden. Sculptural elements dispersed throughout the green area contribute to the aesthetic experience of the site.
