Situated in the village of Isna, municipality of Oleiros, the church stands in its own square. It is a building that stands out in the urban environment of the settlement, surrounded by a churchyard paved with granite cobblestones, offering a space of tranquility.
The origins of this parish are ancient, with records pointing to the 13th century. The temple we see today began to be built in the 16th century, during the reign of D. Manuel I. Its construction extended over time, with works and improvements spanning the following centuries. The church witnessed the life of the community across generations, including significant moments in local history.
The Church of Isna exhibits an architectural design that evolved over time. The main structure is longitudinal, composed of the nave, the chancel, and the bell tower. The main façade, with its door flanked by pilasters and topped by a pediment, captures attention. On one side, the tower adds grandeur to the complex, housing the parish bell. It is a building constructed predominantly with local materials, such as shale.
Upon entering, one discovers a spacious interior, divided into three naves by classical-style columns. The ceilings are one of the highlights, with their richly painted coffered panels, depicting scenes that invite contemplation. On the floor, in addition to the wooden flooring, there are some ancient tombs with coats of arms, testifying to the temple's antiquity.
Two of the most distinctive elements in the interior are the tilework and the woodcarving. The tile panels lining the chancel are dated to the 18th century and associated with the Lisbon School, reflecting the artistic mastery of the era. The large altarpiece of the main altar, in gilded woodcarving, is an imposing 17th-century work, representing the national style. This combination of tilework and woodcarving lends the space a visually rich environment of great artistic value.
Recognized as a Monument of Public Interest, the Parish Church of Isna represents an important built heritage. Its antiquity and the richness of the artistic elements it preserves make a visit a journey through the history and religious art of the region, in a space that invites serenity and cultural discovery.
