The Mother Church is located in the heart of the locality of Vale Formoso. Situated in this serene area of the municipality of Covilhã, it is part of the region encompassing Vale Formoso and Aldeia do Souto. Its presence marks the centre of this community, serving as a landmark in the local landscape.
The church's foundations date back to the 17th century. However, its current form owes much to the reconstruction carried out in the following century, the 18th century. This evolution over time shaped the building we see today, imbuing it with layers of history reflected in its structure.
Upon observing the church, one notes its characteristic longitudinal plan. It consists of a main nave with a high choir and a slightly narrower chancel. Attached to the main body are the sacristy and an annex. Its appearance reflects a mixture of styles that developed between the 17th and 18th centuries, with elements reminiscent of Mannerism, the richness of Baroque, and the delicacy of Rococo.
