The Mother Church is situated in the Village of João Pires, a locality integrated into the municipality of Penamacor. It is located in a central area of the village, accessible to those walking its streets, namely Rua Nova, which connects to National Road 332.
Its position contributes to the visual identity of the oldest part of the settlement, serving as a landmark for residents and visitors.
This religious building, also known as the Church of Santa Maria Madalena, has its origins in the 18th century. It features a design that has been modified over time, having undergone a significant reconstruction in the 20th century. The structure follows a longitudinal plan, characteristic of many parish churches.
It is composed of a main nave, an attached body where the sacristy is located, and a chancel that stands out for being narrower than the nave. The bell tower is attached to the building, giving it its recognizable silhouette.
Despite the interventions carried out over the years, especially the reconstruction in the 20th century, the church still retains some elements of its original 18th-century construction. These details allow for the observation of vestiges of primitive architecture.
Among the notable surviving elements are the lavabo in the sacristy, the gable that defines the top of the temple's main facade, and the tabernacle located inside the chancel. These details offer a direct link to the building's oldest history.
