The Church of Santiago in Belmonte is located in the historical area of the city, close to the Castle, providing a connection with the medieval past of the region.
The church includes the Cabral Chapel, an attached chapel, which houses the image of Our Lady of Hope. This image is notable for having been carried by Pedro Álvares Cabral on his famous voyage, carrying a rich history of exploration and discoveries.
The region of Belmonte has traces of human occupation since Prehistory, and although the Roman presence is also significant, it is in the Middle Ages that the city gains relevance in the History of Portugal.
During the Middle Ages, Belmonte gained prominence. It received a Charter in 1199, granted by D. Sancho I, with the aim of "populate and restore" the region, consolidating the political dominion of the Portuguese crown. This also led to the construction of the Belmonte Castle, transformed from a fortified redoubt into a castle.
Belmonte prospered during the Middle Ages, evidenced by its growth and development, including the existence of two churches, Santiago and Santa Maria, as well as a synagogue.
However, the growth of Belmonte was interrupted by the Fernandine Wars and the Crisis of 1383-1385, which led to the granting of a Charter by D. João I in 1387, aimed at protecting the city in times of conflict.
The Cabral family played a significant role in Belmonte. Luís Álvares Cabral was appointed Alcaide-Mor of the Castle in 1397-1398, and later, in the 16th century, Pedro Álvares Cabral became a highlight in the history of Portugal, leading the 2nd Armada to India and discovering Brazil.
In 1510, D. Manuel I granted a New Charter, recognizing the political and economic importance of Belmonte. In addition, the city was the scene of resistance from the Crypto-Jewish community, which remained despite the persecutions of the Inquisition until the 19th century.
In the 19th century, there were changes in the political organization of Belmonte, including the restructuring of the parishes and the merger of the Parish of Santiago with others to form the current Union of Parishes of Belmonte and Colmeal da Torre.
The Church of Santiago and the Cabral Chapel are tangible testimonies of the rich history of Belmonte, offering tourists the opportunity to explore and understand the cultural and historical importance of the region.
