Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Castelo Branco > Penamacor > Penamacor

Location

Located in the village of Penamacor, the Church of Misericórdia is situated near its oldest core. Its presence is a landmark in the urban landscape, testifying to the development of the locality since ancient times. The building harmoniously integrates into the village environment, reflecting its history and experiences.

Origins and Legacy

The institution of Misericórdia in Portugal dates back to the late 15th century, initiated by Queen D. Leonor, with the purpose of supporting the needy and the sick. In Penamacor, the foundation of Misericórdia is linked to the period of significant growth of the village during the reign of D. Manuel I, in the early 16th century. This church is, therefore, an enduring symbol of the social and religious role these brotherhoods played throughout the centuries.

Architectural Highlights

The building, dating from the 16th century, is notable for its architecture, particularly its main portal. This displays elements of the Manueline style, with delicate vegetal decorations on its archivolts, typical of late Portuguese Gothic. Inside, with Baroque inspiration, the harmony of its spaces stands out. The high choir and the four side altars complement the main chapel. On the south façade, a discreet but significant bell tower marks the church's presence in the daily life of the village.

Artistic Heritage and Devotion

The main chapel houses a gilded carved altarpiece on a red background, where images of the Crucified Lord and Ecce Homo are venerated. In the tribuna domes, national coats of arms can be observed. On the side altars, important artistic representations are found, such as the images of Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lord of the Passion. The life-sized image of Our Lord of the Passion is recognized for its expressiveness and beauty, considered one of the most remarkable in the country. These artistic elements are deeply connected to the community's Lenten rituals.

Notable Traditions

In addition to its religious function, the Church of Misericórdia preserves memories of ancient customs. At its door, until the early 20th century, operated the so-called "foundling wheel," a device where abandoned newborns were received. A singular tradition that still endures is the role of the Misericórdia bell, which is tasked with announcing to the village the passing of its inhabitants, an echo of its deep connection to local life and community.
