The Communal Oven is located in the heart of the historic village of Idanha-a-Velha, integrated into its architectural and archaeological complex. It is situated on Rua do Castelo (Castle Street), a street paved with granite cobblestones that reflects the traditional layout of the village. It is flanked by single-family homes, contributing to the image of a communal life that remains vibrant. In its immediate vicinity, granite stone benches can be found, inviting a pause to observe the daily life of the place.
This communal oven, also known as the People's Oven, possibly has its roots in the 16th century, an era marking its probable construction. Originally, it likely belonged to a local family, but over time and with the evolution of village life, it transformed into a shared-use space. Its history is a testament to how communities organized themselves and kept their traditions alive, centered on sharing and the production of bread, an essential food.
The building features a rectangular plan and robust construction, erected in granite masonry, an abundant and characteristic material of the region. It consists of two main volumes: the oven house and a lean-to intended for firewood storage, both connected by an internal courtyard. The oven itself is a vaulted chamber, also lined with granite stonework, topped by a pyramidal chimney that stands out in the landscape. Columns and moldings in stonework detail the construction, while the roofs are made of wood and half-round tiles, giving it a genuine and traditional appearance.
More than a simple structure for baking bread, this oven has always been a meeting and social point in the village. It is one of the rare examples of ovens that remain operational for their original purpose, continuing to serve the local population. The tradition of sharing the "poia", a portion of the cooked food given in exchange for using the oven, clearly illustrates the communal spirit that defines it. It is a place that offers a glimpse into an authentic aspect of Portuguese rural life, where tradition and practical use intertwine.
