Location

The Enxarrique Archaeological Station is located in the municipality of Vila Velha de Ródão, in an area of remarkable natural beauty. It is situated on a peaceful plain, on the banks where the Enxarrique Stream joins the Tagus River. This isolated spot offers a serene environment, close to the urban cluster of Vila Velha de Ródão and the imposing rock formations known as Portas do Ródão. The site also provides a viewpoint, from where the surrounding landscape can be appreciated.

A Window to the Distant Past

This archaeological site is a remarkable testament to human presence in remote times, with an occupation dating back to the Lower and Middle Paleolithic periods. Discovered in 1982, the station proved to be a place of great scientific value, recognized for its importance in understanding the hunter-gatherer communities that inhabited it. Its excavation allowed for the identification of a wide range of carved lithic materials, offering insights into the techniques and ways of life of our ancestors.

Traces of Other Eras

In addition to the prehistoric evidence, the Enxarrique Archaeological Station surprises with its superposition of eras. Traces of a Roman military camp from the 1st century BC were found, with evidence such as fireplaces and lead projectiles, suggesting the passage of Roman troops along the Tagus valley. One of the most intriguing findings at the site are the remains of various animals, including some of the most recent evidence of the presence of the European elephant on the continent before its extinction, making this site relevant for paleontology as well.
