Located in the parish of Vila Velha de Ródão, this castle stands imposingly on a cliff, dominating the landscape of the Tagus River. Its remarkable position allows for a view of the famous Portas de Ródão (Gates of Ródão), a natural narrowing of the river, and offers a wide panoramic view over the surrounding valley. From an altitude of about 300 meters, it is possible to contemplate the beauty of the Beira and Alentejo provinces stretching out on the horizon.

Historical Legacy

Ródão Castle, also popularly known as King Wamba's Castle, has a history rooted in distant eras. Although a popular legend associates it with the Visigothic monarch Wamba, the watchtower we see today was likely built between the 12th and 13th centuries, by initiative of the Knights Templar. This site played a crucial defensive role during the Christian Reconquista, functioning as a strategic surveillance point for the Tagus border, protecting against incursions from the south. Its military relevance was maintained in subsequent centuries, having been used as an artillery base in conflicts such as the Peninsular Wars.

Architecture and Preservation

Ródão Castle presents itself as a robust square-plan tower, approximately fifteen meters high, once part of a more extensive walled enclosure. Its stonework facings are made of stone masonry, bearing the mark of centuries of history. Over time, the fortification underwent several reconstructions, particularly in the early 19th century. In 2007, the castle underwent significant recovery works, aiming to consolidate its structures and allow its history and views to be appreciated by visitors today.
