Located in the peaceful village of Caria, in the municipality of Belmonte, the Ethnographic House is situated on Rua Joaquim Borrego Cameira. In the last century, Caria played a remarkable role as a commercial meeting point, benefiting from access via national roads and a railway connection. This strategic positioning fostered the development of crafts and the circulation of knowledge, profoundly shaping the life and traditions of the community.
Upon entering the Ethnographic House, we are invited on a journey through the memories of daily life in Beira in times past. The space is dedicated to safeguarding and presenting the experiences of an era, recreating domestic environments such as the kitchen, living room, and bedrooms, with their characteristic objects and utensils. It is an opportunity to observe how living conditions evolved over a century, reflecting the simplicity and routines of yesteryear.
The permanent exhibition dedicated to Arts and Crafts constitutes a central point of the visit. With over two hundred pieces, this collection offers an in-depth look at the richness and anthropological value of professions that shaped local society in the early 20th century. The instruments and daily tasks of carpenters, barbers, and shoemakers are observed in detail, illustrating their essential role in the community. Many of these objects that enrich the collection were generously donated by citizens, such as Mr. Mário Tomás and Mrs. Lurdes Afonso, who contributed to their preservation.
