The Eugénio de Andrade House of Poetry is located in Póvoa de Atalaia, a village in the municipality of Fundão. This village, nestled next to the Serra da Gardunha, was the birthplace of the poet Eugénio de Andrade, where he lived his first eight years of life.
The choice of this location reflects the poet's deep connection to his homeland, as he expressed in the famous phrase: “Póvoa de Atalaia is my land. It needed to be said from the heart. It is said”.
This cultural space, formerly a primary school, is now an interpretative center dedicated to the life and vast work of Eugénio de Andrade, one of the greatest names in 20th-century Portuguese literature. The site invites an immersion into the universe of the poet, born in 1923, and who in 2001 was awarded the Camões Prize, the highest literary honor in the Portuguese language.
The House of Poetry is a meeting point with the legacy of a writer who, through a unique sensibility, explored themes such as love, intimacy, and nature, using a lyrical and precise language that brought him international recognition.
As visitors walk through the spaces of the House of Poetry, they encounter a biographical journey that mirrors the life and work of Eugénio de Andrade. Here it is possible to observe original manuscripts, written by his own hand, which offer an intimate glimpse into the poet's creative process.
The exhibition highlights the depth of his writing, marked by simple but touching verses, influenced by currents such as surrealism, and which always sought the exact word. It is also a place to connect with the affection the poet dedicated to his mother and to the book "Poesia. Terra de minha Mãe" (Poetry. My Mother's Land), central elements in his formation and inspiration. Furthermore, the space hosts the words of other contemporary poets and friends, such as Jorge de Sena, Carlos de Oliveira, and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, enriching the cultural experience.
