The Cherry House is located in Alcongosta, a mountain village in the municipality of Fundão, nestled on the slopes of the Serra da Gardunha. This region, part of Cova da Beira, is deeply marked by cherry cultivation, visible in the surrounding landscape. Particularly in spring, the orchards transform the mountain into a remarkable scenery, with their white blossoms painting the hillside, creating a visually appealing atmosphere for visitors.
Housed in the former primary school of Alcongosta, the Cherry House emerges as a central hub for knowledge about this fruit. The project aims to explore the depth and relevance of the cherry, especially the Fundão Cherry, which has become a local icon and transformed both the natural heritage and the lives of the region's people. It is a space designed to transmit knowledge about the cherry tree and its fruit, revealing its cultural, economic, and anthropological impact over time.
Inside the Cherry House, visitors are invited on a sensory and discovery journey. Through multimedia and interactive content, the tour reveals the various aspects of the cherry tree and its fruit. The exhibitions are organized into rooms that function as chapters, telling the story of the cherry in the world and, in particular, on the slopes of the Serra da Gardunha.
They explore the diverse existing varieties, the geographical evolution of the orchards, and the cherry's production cycle, from planting to distribution. There is also space to learn about the arts and crafts linked to cherry cultivation, such as the art of basketry, which captivates with its tradition and ingenuity.
