The complex of the Lion Chapel and the Monumental Fountain is located in the village of Alpedrinha. The chapel appears to be secluded, in a quiet corner of the locality. The fountain, in turn, is situated in a more open space, in front of a spacious square, and near what would have been the access to the old Palácio do Picadeiro.
The Lion Chapel, also known as Saint Catherine's Chapel, dates back to the period between the late 15th century and the early 16th century. This unique small temple stands out for its architecture, which blends elements of Late Gothic with Renaissance aesthetics. On the facade, the classical portico, of Renaissance inspiration, with perfect round arches and sculpted medallions representing Saint Peter and Saint Paul, draws attention. Flanked by ornate pilasters and topped by a triangular pediment, this portico is sometimes associated with the school of the sculptor Nicolau de Chanterenne.
On the same facade, one can see the coat of arms of Cardinal D. Jorge da Costa, a major figure in local history who was born in Alpedrinha, and an image of Saint Catherine in white marble. Upon entering, visitors find an interesting interior, highlighted by the 16th-century tiled cladding in a checkered white and green pattern, and a carved wooden altarpiece with panels depicting moments from the Life of Christ, showing Italian influences of the period.
Known as both the Monumental Fountain and the King's Fountain, this imposing fountain was built in the first half of the 18th century, during the Joanine period. It is a central element in the area where it is located, standing out for its grandeur.
It has six spouts, three of which discharge directly into a large main tank. The entire structure is framed by two flights of stairs, giving it a scenographic appearance. It is located in front of a spacious square, which emphasizes its scale.
