The Chapel of São Dâmaso is located in the tranquil Idanha-a-Velha, nestled within the urban fabric of this historic locality. It is situated on a sloping area, with its main facade facing a street paved with granite cobblestones. Interestingly, just above it, at a higher elevation, passes a section of the ancient Roman road, also marked by granite paving. The chapel is flanked by cultivated fields, offering a calm environment integrated into the rural landscape surrounding the village.
This chapel dates back to the 18th century, having been built in the year 1743. Its construction was commissioned by José António de Azevedo Robalo, who was a priest in Sabugal and vicar in Idanha-a-Velha. The date and the founder's name can be observed in an inscription carved on the lintel of the main door, a detail that tells a little about its history and religious origin.
The Chapel of São Dâmaso exhibits a Mannerist style, with a simple structure that includes a nave and a slightly narrower chancel. The exterior facades are plastered and painted white, contrasting with the granite stonework elements in the quoins (the corners of the construction), friezes, and cornices. The main entrance is distinguished by a straight-lintel stone portal, above which are visible the founder's coat of arms and a niche housing the image of the saint. The interior features granite slab flooring and a wooden ceiling, painted sky blue. In the chancel area, which is slightly elevated, there is an altarpiece also made of granite stonework, decorated with Ionic columns and other elements characteristic of the Mannerist style. There is also an unusual detail inside: a well located in the chancel.
Originally built for religious use, the Chapel of São Dâmaso had its function altered over time. After restoration and adaptation works carried out in the early 2000s, the building was transformed into a cultural and recreational space. Currently, it is used as an exhibition gallery, hosting various shows and events. This reconversion allows the heritage to be preserved and continue to have life, now serving culture.
