The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Castelo is located in a natural setting of great beauty, at the Romaria Site, in Vila Velha de Ródão. Situated at the southern tip of the Serra das Talhadas, or Serra de São Miguel, it rises on a schist hill. From this position, it offers a stunning view over the Tagus River and the imposing Portas de Ródão, a remarkable geological monument. The rural surroundings, with their shrub and tree vegetation, invite a moment of tranquility and contemplation.
The presence of this chapel on the site hypothetically dates back to the 11th or 12th centuries, perhaps with roots in even older structures. Its current form is likely the result of a reconstruction dating from the 16th century, having undergone interventions over time. The chapel's construction is linked to a local tradition: it is said to have been built in gratitude for a miracle that occurred with fishermen in the waters of the Tagus, near the Portas de Ródão, which gives it a particular significance for the community.
With influences reminiscent of classicism, the chapel features a simple plan, composed of two rectangular areas corresponding to the nave and the chancel. The main façade, facing west, is distinguished by its full arch portal, adorned with a shell and flanked by straight-lined windows. Above the portal, there is a discreet niche, and the façade is topped by a simple gable. The sobriety of its openings, without elaborate moldings, contributes to its serene atmosphere.
Upon entering, one discovers a space with subdued lighting. The floor is cemented and the wooden ceiling has a trough-like shape. Flanking the entrance, there are two holy water fonts, one of them with a fluted truncated-conical shape. The chancel, narrower and lower, is enhanced by a gilded and polychrome carved altarpiece, in the national Baroque style, which, despite having been targeted by thefts in the past, retains its central tribune flanked by pilasters. The altar front, covered with geometric pattern tiles in shades of blue, brown, and green on a white background, is an element of interest, bearing witness to Hispano-Moorish art.
