The Erges Canyon is located in the village of Segura, part of the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova. This area is characterized by the presence of the Erges River, a tributary of the Tagus that, at this point, forms the natural border between Portugal and Spain. The site is recognized for its wild and isolated environment, offering a sense of immersion in nature.
From various surrounding vantage points, one can enjoy extensive views of the riverbed and the surrounding landscape, which stretches across a vast horizon. The proximity of the old Roman bridge of Segura, connecting the two banks, provides a privileged observation point to appreciate the scale and uniqueness of this scenery.
This canyon stands out as the largest granite formation exposed in the Tejo Internacional region. Its origin is due to the continuous and powerful action of the Erges River which, over thousands of years, carved out the massive rock, giving rise to three remarkable gorges that succeed one another at a short distance.
In some segments, the river flows at an impressive depth, which can reach about 150 meters. This pronounced depth and the imposing rocky cliffs reveal the grandeur of nature's erosive force and the geological complexity of this location.
The rocky cliffs and the riparian ecosystem of the Erges Canyon are of great natural value, serving as a refuge and nesting site for various birds, particularly raptors and rupicolous species. The presence of these species contributes to a dynamism in the sky, where their flights can be observed.
The surrounding landscape complements the experience, with its characteristic vegetation and, in some places, the discreet presence of old watermills along the riverbanks. These elements, which bear witness to an ancestral human adaptation to the territory, integrate harmoniously into the natural environment, enriching the visit to the site.
