This church is located within the urban fabric of Idanha-a-Nova, part of a building complex situated on a hillside. Its position in the town integrates it into the historical and traditional environment of the village.

History of the Building

The original construction of this building dates back to the 15th century. Born as part of a complex linked to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, its initial function included not only religious worship, but also social support, integrating spaces for the brotherhood and a hospital. Over the centuries, the complex underwent several changes and expansions, particularly in the 18th century and early 20th century, adapting to the needs of the community.

Exterior Architecture

The church's main facade presents a robust appearance in rustic granite masonry. The entrance portal stands out, with a perfect arch lintel and projecting imposts. Above the door, a rectangular window illuminates the interior. The triangular gable topping the facade is adorned with a cornice and pinnacles at the corners and on the apex. The church is integrated into a larger complex, with annexed volumes forming an inner courtyard, where the contrast between the visible stone of the church and the plastered and white-painted areas of the other parts of the building is noticeable.

Interior Environment

Inside, the church features a single nave, inviting introspection. The floor is covered with granite slabs, where some funerary chapels can be observed. The nave is covered by a barrel vault, while the chancel, narrower, has a groin vault. A wooden choir loft is located above the entrance. Attention is drawn to the granite pulpit, accessible by a staircase attached to the wall. There are also two side altars. The triumphal arch, with a perfect curve and projecting imposts, marks the transition to the chancel, whose gilded woodcarving stands out as a prominent artistic element in the space.
