The Chapel of Santa Bárbara is located in Sítio de Santa Bárbara, in the village of Açoreira, part of the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo. It stands isolated on a high point in the urban area, accessible by stairways. Its location is particularly interesting as it is built upon an artificial elevation, known locally as an 'escorial' (slag heap), formed by residues from ancient mining activities, thus reflecting a direct historical connection with the region's past.
The construction of this chapel likely dates back to the 18th century. Its historical and cultural importance has been officially recognized, having been classified as a Property of Public Interest. The temple's dedication to Santa Bárbara, traditionally venerated as the patron saint of miners, takes on a special meaning here. This devotion reflects the heritage and importance of mining in the area over time, a history that is manifested in the very foundation of the chapel upon the artificial slag hill.
The chapel features an architectural design that fits within the Baroque style. It has a rectangular plan and a main facade with a cut gable, topped by a bell-gable where the bell is located. The entrance portal, with a straight lintel, is flanked by pilasters and topped by a pediment decorated with volutes and a medallion. There is also a niche above the medallion.
Inside, the most distinctive feature is the ceiling in a barrel vault. This vault is notably adorned with ribs and rosettes, dividing into twelve painted coffers. Each of these mural panels depicts scenes alluding to the life of Saint Barbara, constituting an artistic element of great value. The main altar area is dominated by a carved altarpiece, combining golden and green tones, and in its central niche it houses the sculpted image of the patron saint.
