Pimentéis Manor

Category: Civil Architecture > Palace

District: Bragança > Torre de Moncorvo > Torre de Moncorvo > Centro

Location:

The Solar dos Pimentéis is located in the heart of the village of Torre de Moncorvo, in the urban center. Its main facade opens onto a small square paved with cobblestones, integrating harmoniously into the historic fabric of the locality. At the rear of the manor, there is a small garden with a stone fountain, a detail that complements its presence in the village setting.

History and Heritage

Dating from the first half of the 18th century, the Solar dos Pimentéis is a building with a rich history, linked to one of the notable families of the region. It was the home of D. Engrácia da Silva and Captain-Major João Carlos d'Oliveira Pimentel, and the birthplace of General António José Claudino d'Oliveira Pimentel, in 1776. Over the centuries, the manor underwent various interventions that adapted and enriched its structure, reflecting the architectural trends of each era.

Baroque Architecture

This imposing manor exhibits a distinct Baroque architecture, characterized by its two-story main facade, which unfolds in two distinct sections. Elements such as Tuscan pilasters, friezes, and granite ashlar cornices mark its elegance. The windows, with segmental arches on the ground floor and sills on the upper floor, feature ornate frames with cutouts, counter-curved cornices, and decorative elements such as shells, lateral ears, and aprons with volutes. This composition lends the building a stately character and a remarkable visual presence in the urban landscape.

Interiors and Neoclassical Decoration

Inside the Solar dos Pimentéis, a welcoming vestibule stands out with a granite staircase leading to the upper floor. The various rooms on this noble floor reveal stuccoed ceilings, with a Neoclassical style decoration dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The sobriety and rationality of Neoclassicism are manifested in motifs that evoke the Adam style. One of the most fascinating spaces is the music room, where the octagonal ceiling is adorned with circular medallions. These medallions display figures alluding to the Four Seasons and maritime-fluvial scenes painted in oil, while the corners feature musical motifs in stucco, with intertwined instruments, enveloped by delicate vegetal decoration. The main hall, with its equally stuccoed false groin vaulted ceiling, opens onto the small interior garden, creating a harmonious link between the built space and nature.
