The Silk House is located in Bragança, in the area of Sé, Santa Maria and Meixedo, in the locality of Loreto. More specifically, it is situated on Rua dos Batoques, in a riverside setting, on the left bank of the Fervença river. This position allows it to take advantage of its proximity to the watercourse, fitting into an environment where nature intersects with the urban fabric of the city.
This unique building has a long history, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. At that time, the structure supported the flourishing silk industry in the Trás-os-Montes region, being used for dyeing fabrics. Later, in the 19th and 20th centuries, the site was transformed into a mill, retaining to this day the original architectural features that bear witness to that past. Over time, it was also private property, where local bread and biscuits were produced, harnessing the mill's power.
Currently, the Silk House offers visitors an opportunity to explore the world of silk. In a permanent exhibition, it is possible to follow the silkworm life cycle, from its development to cocoon formation, and understand the traditional spinning and weaving processes that transformed delicate threads into fabric. It is a space that provides a glimpse into an important part of the region's economic and cultural history.
Beyond its historical and cultural aspects, the Silk House stands out as an example of innovation in sustainability. The building was restored to function as a model of energy efficiency, integrating renewable technologies. Here, one can observe a smart microgrid that combines photovoltaic solar energy with a small hydroelectric power plant, installed where the old mill once operated. The Silk House thus functions as a true living laboratory, demonstrating solutions for future "smart homes" and providing visitors with a practical understanding of renewable energy production and management.
