The ruins of Modorra Fort are located in a serene rural setting, in the Modorra area, Vila Verde locality, Vinhais municipality. Situated atop a hill, this site offers a privileged perspective over the winding Tuela River, which embraces it on three of its sides. The surroundings are marked by cultivated fields, lending the area a sense of isolation and contact with the Trás-os-Montes nature.
This site holds a historical legacy presumed to date back to the 1st or 2nd centuries, the era in which it is believed to have been built. Its original function was that of a watchtower, a Roman military lookout tower. Strategically positioned, it would have served as support for an ancient Roman road that passed nearby, making it a crucial observation point in antiquity.
Of what was once a robust military structure, today only the vestiges of walls built from mortared schist remain. The base of an irregularly oval-shaped tower is visible, measuring approximately 8 by 7 meters. Although the ruins may be partially hidden in the landscape due to the passage of time and surrounding agricultural activity, a careful observation allows one to discern their ancestral contours and peculiar shape.
Beyond its archaeological value, Modorra Fort offers an environment of peace and contemplation. Its elevated position provides expansive views over the Tuela River valley and the typical rural landscape of Trás-os-Montes. Despite being discreet ruins, they are recognized as a historical-cultural landmark, inviting a moment of reflection on the antiquity of the territory and the civilizations that passed through here.
