The Ruin of the Church of São Salvador de Ansiães is located in the parish of Lavandeira, Beira Grande and Selores, in the municipality of Carrazeda de Ansiães, in the district of Bragança, in Portugal.
This church is notable for being one of the most interesting representatives of Romanesque architecture in Portugal.
The Church of Ansiães was classified as a national monument in 1928, recognizing its historical and architectural importance.
The initial construction of the church dates back to the first half of the 12th century, with stylistic elements similar to the Cathedral of Braga and the church of São Cláudio de Nogueira.
The church has a single nave and a rectangular chancel, which is narrower and lower than the body of the church.
The church's portals are adorned with significant sculptural programs. The main portal was completed in the early 13th century and represents the universal Order for the Romanesque man. It separates the earthly world, represented by grotesque and feline figures, from the celestial field through an undecorated archivolt, symbolizing the separation between Good and Evil. The tympanum displays the Pantocrator, Christ the judge, flanked by the Evangelists, an important representation of Romanesque symbology.
In a later phase of history, a funerary chapel of the Sampaio family, who were lords of the village during the final decades of the 1st Dynasty, was added to the front of the church.
In addition to its historical and architectural richness, the church is located in a charming rural setting, providing a tranquil and picturesque experience for visitors.
