, The pillory dates back to a medieval tradition of marking local and judicial power, and over the centuries it underwent several modifications and even partial destruction.
, In 1853, with the extinction of the municipality of Vilarinho da Castanheira, the pillory was probably demolished.
, In 2009, it was rebuilt and placed again in a square in the town, respecting its original form.
The pillory is isolated in a small square, near a road in the village, surrounded by traditional buildings of the region. Nearby, one of the Stations of the Via Sacra can be seen, another point of cultural interest.
It has a commemorative character, being a memory of the historical past of the village, especially of its administration and social organization.
