The pillory stands in a small central square of the village of Pinhovelo, integrated into the parish of Amendoeira, municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros. Around it, one and two-story rural houses, made of stone and shale, compose the typical architectural frame of Trás-os-Montes.
From the site, glimpses of the Serra de Bornes can be obtained, while cobbled paths converge to this point, making the monument a visual reference for those circulating through the village.
The origin of the pillory dates back to the 16th century, a period when Pinhovelo had its own jurisdiction. A Pombaline reform, dated 1776 and inscribed on the capital, defined its current profile. Since 1933, it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, testifying to the municipal autonomy of yesteryear.
With the administrative reorganization of the 19th century, it lost its judicial function but remained an identity symbol for the community.
Built in granite, it features a quadrangular three-step plinth supporting a cubic base. The octagonal shaft displays besants alternating with diamond points. This is followed by a prismatic capital with rounded edges, where the date 1776 is inscribed.
The finial includes a block with the arms of Portugal crowned and topped by a pyramidal pine cone ending in a sphere, evoking the royal authority that the pillory represented.
The square, with little movement, invites contemplation. In the late afternoon, the light enhances the golden tones of the granite, creating photogenic contrasts with the surrounding greenery. The chirping of birds and conversations among neighbors compose the tranquil atmosphere of this Trás-os-Montes corner.
Without intense traffic or immediate commerce, the space allows for detailed appreciation of the sculptural elements and the historical memory that the monument holds.
Pinhovelo is indeed a village belonging to the parish of Amendoeira, in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros.
