The Ansiães Pillory is located in the village of Lavandeira, part of the Union of Parishes of Lavandeira, Beira Grande and Selores, in the municipality of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Bragança district. It is integrated into the outdoor area of the Church of São Salvador, next to the walls of the old castle.
The surroundings combine the medieval layout of the fortification's granite stones with the rural simplicity of the village. Its position, next to the churchyard, allows for the appreciation of the heritage complex in an atmosphere of calm and introspection.
Classified as a National Monument since 1928, this pillory testifies to the administrative and judicial importance of Ansiães in medieval times. Although it is dismantled, the shaft and part of the capital are preserved, pieces that reveal the status of municipal jurisdiction that the territory once held.
The granite fragments seem to reveal transformations through the marks of wear. Each chip and crack records centuries of weathering, offering a profound insight into local power practices and how public spaces were claimed by the community.
The cylindrical shaft features soft fluting, contrasting with the austere-lined capital, where a simple finish, without exuberant ornamentation, can be discerned. The grayish hue of the granite harmonizes with the limestone of the church walls.
Its placement in the churchyard creates a discreet point of interest, inviting a contemplative pause. Natural light falls upon the pieces, highlighting their textures and suggesting a dialogue between the granite's robustness and the serenity of the surrounding religious space.
