The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Nazo is located in the village of Póvoa, in the municipality of Miranda do Douro. Situated in an area with the unique characteristics of the Trás-os-Montes region, this place invites discovery of an environment that merges history with the surrounding nature. Its position, linked to the popular legend's designation of the "Serra do Nazo" (Nazo Mountain), suggests a landscape setting that is an integral part of its charm.
The history of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Nazo is deeply rooted in a captivating popular legend. It is said that a celestial figure appeared to a shepherd guarding his flock on the mountain, asking him to build a chapel there. To indicate the exact location, the Lady is said to have shown the shepherd a luminous procession that same night.
Initially reluctant, the man yielded to the divine request. However, his wife opposed the idea, and it is said that, for this defiance, she became paralyzed. As soon as the woman promised to erect the chapel, she immediately recovered her normal state. Work began, and the legend adds that the stones for construction were transported by oxen that, on their own, pulled the carts without needing guidance and with no apparent effort, returning by themselves for new loads.
This sanctuary assumes a role of great religious and cultural significance, functioning as a meeting point for the community and devotees. Its importance is particularly notable during the annual pilgrimage, a period when the site transforms into a stage for celebrations and sharing of faith.
It is a space where local traditions remain alive, reflecting a legacy of devotion that endures over time. The sanctuary represents more than a building; it is a link to the identity and spirit of the people of Miranda do Douro, a place of collective memory and strong symbolism.
Although written records attesting to its history only date back to the year 1666, it is believed that the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Nazo has much older roots. This sacred space hides vast riches, not only religious but also social and cultural, that have developed over centuries.
Every element of the sanctuary, from its centuries-old stones to the simplest details, is a silent testament to the past. The site holds considerable historical value, inviting reflection on the generations that left their mark there and on the community's deep connection to this heritage.
