The Coronel Albino Pereira Lopo Municipal Museum of Archaeology is located in the heart of Macedo de Cavaleiros. The building that houses it has an interesting history, as it was, for decades, the Trinta Primary School. This transformation gives the space a particular connection to the memory and past of the local community.
This museum invites an exploration of human origins and evolution within the territory of the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros. Through its collections, it is possible to journey through more than five thousand years of history. The collection comprises various archaeological pieces meticulously gathered in the region, offering a panorama of the life of the communities that inhabited these lands since time immemorial.
One of the museum's particular features is its immersive approach, which seeks to bring visitors closer to the original environments of archaeological sites. Inside, it is possible to observe recreations of ancient habitats, such as a Bronze Age hut and a Romanized dwelling. These representations were designed based on structures discovered in local excavations, such as Fraga dos Corvos or the archaeological sites of Cramanchão and Terronha de Pinhovelo, using natural and authentic materials to reconstruct the daily life and experiences of the populations that once inhabited this area.
The museum's name pays homage to Colonel Albino Pereira Lopo (1860-1933), a prominent figure in Portuguese archaeology. Considered one of the pioneers in this field, Colonel Albino Pereira Lopo stood out for his extensive work and the recognition achieved at national level, and particularly in the Trás-os-Montes region. He authored the first monograph on Bragança and was also the driving force behind the creation of that city's Municipal Museum, today known as the Abade de Baçal Museum, establishing a notable historical and cultural connection to the territory.
