The Berta Cabral Municipal Museum is located in the heart of Vila Flor's urban area. It is situated in a central square of the village, near the main church. The building is an integral part of the street frontage, occupying a prominent position in this public space.
The house that hosts the museum has a long and multifaceted history, dating back to the 12th or 13th centuries. Originally, it served as the manor house of the Aguilar family, the first donataries of Vila Flor. Over time, the building served various functions essential to community life, including that of the Town Hall (Paços do Concelho). It also underwent other uses, having housed spaces such as the old municipal butcher's shop, the tax office, a police post, and the village library.
On the exterior, the granite architecture stands out for its heraldic representations. On the main facade, one can observe the Royal Arms, which include the Fleur-de-Lis, a symbol identifying Vila Flor. On the west-facing facade, the Aguilar family coat of arms is engraved, represented by two eagles.
Founded in 1957 by Raúl de Sá Correia, who served as its director for many years, the Berta Cabral Museum houses a vast collection of objects that tell the history and culture of the municipality. The collection comprises around three thousand pieces, many of them donated by people connected to this land.
Visitors to the museum have the opportunity to explore different thematic sections. The collections cover areas such as archeology, displaying vestiges of the remote past, ethnography, which portrays daily life and local traditions, painting, including works by regional artists, sacred art, numismatics and medal studies, and also a collection of African craftsmanship. This diverse collection offers a comprehensive insight into the material and cultural heritage of Vila Flor and its people.
