The Jewish Museum of Carção is situated in the heart of Carção, a village in the municipality of Vimioso. It is located within its historic zone, an environment that preserves the architectural features and streets that witnessed the community's life throughout the centuries.
This museum space is dedicated to exploring and preserving the history and life of the local Crypto-Jewish community. It reveals how these individuals, forced to convert to Christianity, secretly maintained their Jewish faith, developing their own practices and rituals, distinct from Orthodox Judaism. It is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of an ancient culture.
Inside the museum, it is possible to discover a collection of materials that offer a glimpse into the daily life and beliefs of the Crypto-Jews. Highlights include household objects and epigraphic elements, i.e., inscriptions that preserve messages and symbols from that era. One of the central points of the exhibition is a lintel with a sculpted Lion of Judah, a piece that was recovered from a ruined building and represents a strong symbol of Jewish identity.
An integral part of the museum's collection is a valuable compilation of prayers. These records, dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries, allow for an understanding of the secret religious practices and the depth of spirituality of Carção's Jewish community. Furthermore, the museum features a memorial listing the names of Carção residents who were imprisoned and penanced by the Inquisition, a painful but essential reminder of the historical impact on the lives of these people.
