The museum is located in the central area of Mirandela, making it easy to find for those exploring the heart of the city. It is housed in the Cultural Centre building, a landmark in the urban area.
This museum space opened its doors in 1981. It owes its existence and much of its collection to the legacy of the artist Armindo Teixeira Lopes, a native of Mirandela, whose name it honours. His heirs donated an important set of works that forms the initial and permanent core of the museum.
Over time, the collection has been enriched with new pieces, resulting from acquisitions made by the Municipality and other occasional donations, which complement the original fund left by the patron's family.
The museum holds a significant collection primarily dedicated to contemporary art. The focus is mainly on works produced in the 20th century, with a strong representation of Portuguese artists. The collection includes approximately 500 works.
Within the museum, it is possible to find different forms of artistic expression, such as painting, engraving, drawing, and sculpture, as well as less numerous pieces of photography and medal art, showcasing the diversity of the assembled collection.
The collection of exhibited works offers insight into the trends and concerns that marked art in Portugal, from the 19th century to more recent times. The pieces illustrate the evolution and multiplicity of styles that developed during this period.
The museum features various renowned artists, both nationally and internationally, who contribute to the collection's significance. Names such as Armindo Teixeira Lopes, Nadir Afonso, Júlio Resende, Júlio Pomar, Graça Morais, Manuel Cargaleiro, Mário Cesariny, Vieira da Silva, among many others, are part of this collection.
