This church, dating from the 13th-14th centuries, is a remarkable example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture in the region. It is considered a National Monument and stands out for its main facade with a richly decorated pointed arch.
The main entrance features a pointed arch adorned with relief details, and in the same space are two figurative bas-reliefs. One of these reliefs depicts a birthing scene, adding a curious and intriguing note to the facade.
Inside the church, you can admire mural paintings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, creating a connection with the artistic and religious past of the region. Some of these paintings are still well preserved and offer a fascinating view of the art of the time.
The church's chancel houses a representation of great religious significance, the apostle James (Santiago). Other notable figures include the representation of St. Christopher, a giant, and a frieze related to the birth of Jesus.
The main altar is a baroque carved work that represents the national artistic style of the time. Highlight the 16th-century painted panels that adorn the altar, featuring St. Martin and St. Lawrence, with remarkable artistic value.
The entrance portal exhibits characteristics of the Romanesque-Gothic transition, with a pointed arch and rounded details. Observing the anthropomorphic corbel that supports the outer archivolt is a singular experience. An intriguing relief of three women, possibly symbolizing childbirth, also draws attention.
Explore the unique architectural elements, such as the bell tower with its round-arched windows that house the bells. On the gables, you will find arcossolios and bas-relief representations, including human and zoomorphic figures, such as pigs, birds, and bulls.
The interior of the church, despite its striking exterior decoration, is characterized by its simplicity. Highlight the two carved altars that flank the triumphal arch of perfect return, providing a serene experience of contemplation.
