The Church and Convent of São Bento is located in the city of Bragança, on Rua de São Francisco.
It is situated in the urban area, in a position that allows for its easy identification for those traversing this part of the locality.
This temple dates back to the 16th century. Its history is linked to the foundation of a convent of nuns of the Order of São Bento, which began in the year 1590.
The church we observe today was the conventual church, serving the needs of the former Benedictine nuns' convent.
On the building's façade, it is possible to notice some details that tell its history.
The coats of arms, which remain visible, and the pediment, at the top, which features characteristic elements of the Baroque style, stand out.
Upon entering, the interior reveals noteworthy aspects. The nave's ceiling is vaulted and decorated with paintings.
These paintings on the nave's ceiling are attributed to Manuel Caetano Fortuna. In the chancel, the main area of the temple, there is an altarpiece dating from the year 1721.
The chancel ceiling features a high-quality scenographic painting, which uses the technique of Trompe-l'oeil, creating a visual illusion.
