Nestled in the heart of Vale de Juncal, the small church stands flanked by narrow cobblestone streets, where the white houses contrast with the granite of the sills and low walls. The rural surroundings reveal cultivated fields and some vineyards, creating a peaceful and almost timeless scenery.
The building occupies a slight elevated platform, accessible by a set of stone steps, which reinforces the feeling of a sacred precinct. Here, silence is only broken by the rustling of the leaves of plane trees planted next to the facade.
Although humble in size, the church dates back centuries, bearing witness to the faith of generations who inhabited this region of Trás-os-Montes. Over time, it underwent several renovations, but gained new life thanks to the dedication of the residents, who restored the space while preserving its original character.
The interior, with its single nave, preserves traces of simple carving and a stone altar, where the sobriety of its design stands out, a characteristic feature of the community chapels in the municipality of Mirandela.
The whitewashed facade, framed by rough granite elements, is highlighted by the separate bell gable where the main bell rests, crowned by a simple cross. The contrast between the vibrant white and the grey of the granite lends character to the ensemble.
On clear days, light streams through the slits of the wooden, chime-like door, casting soft shadows on the interior floor. From the exterior, this small temple offers a revealing photographic spot of the harmony between popular architecture and the surrounding rural landscape.
