Captivating Legend

A thrilling local legend tells of an episode of bravery and conversion. During a battle between Moors and Catholics near the current convent, a Christian knight chased a wounded Moor to the church. The Moor entered the church injured, and the Christian knight had his hands trapped at the entrance of the church, where he left the marks of his horse's horseshoes. This story symbolizes a moment of transformation and is one of the most captivating legends associated with the church.

Pre-Romanesque Origins

The Church of São Facundo has ancient roots, possibly dating back to the 9th-10th centuries. Its original devotion was linked to the Holy Trinity, as evidenced by the granite sculptures on the main door. These figures represent the three aspects of the Holy Trinity, conveying the belief and spirituality of the time.

Mysterious Architecture

The current structure of the church, presumably from the 13th century, exhibits remarkable architectural elements. Inspired by the late Romanesque tradition, it features unique characteristics of the medieval architecture of Trás-os-Montes. The main facade stands out for its impressive verticality, which was enhanced to incorporate a double-belfry bell tower, adding a distinctive touch to the design.

Signs of the Past

When observing the threshold of the church door, you will find intriguing marks that, according to legend, were left by the hooves of the Christian knight's horse. This feature is a vivid connection to the thrilling narrative and serves as testimony to a crucial moment in the history of the church.

Trás-os-Montes Relic

Recognized as the oldest church in Trás-os-Montes, the Church of São Facundo is a historical and spiritual relic. Its long history and cultural influence make it an unmissable point of interest for visitors who wish to explore the rich heritage of the region.
