The Church of Castro de Avelãs is a small Christian temple located in the parish of Castro de Avelãs, in the municipality of Bragança. The current building is the former Mudéjar chevet of the Benedictine monastery of São Salvador, which was built in the 12th or 13th century and became the most influential monastic community in the Bragança region.
Since 1910, the Church of Castro de Avelãs has been classified as a National Monument in Portugal, standing out for its historical and architectural value.
The chevet of the church is one of the best examples of Mudéjar Romanesque architecture in the country, with few parallels found in Leonese temples. It is characterized by the use of bricks in the construction, and the main chapel and the two apsidioles still remain, providing an authentic glimpse of the architectural style of the time.
The church is an important historical testimony of the former Benedictine monastery of São Salvador, which, unfortunately, fell into ruins after its deactivation in the 16th century. This association with the monastic life of the past adds value to the site.
In addition to the architecture, the Church of Castro de Avelãs offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the history and culture of the Bragança region, exploring the relationship between the church and the monastic community that existed there in the past.
The church is still occasionally used for religious events and celebrations, creating a spiritual atmosphere and allowing visitors to experience a bit of the local devotion.
