The Terras de Cavaleiros Geopark occupies the entirety of the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, extending over an area of approximately 700 km². This vast territory is located in the heart of Northeast Trás-os-Montes, a region known for its nature and rural character. The center of Macedo de Cavaleiros, where the geopark is situated, serves as a starting point for exploring the diversity of this location.
Recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, the Terras de Cavaleiros Geopark is a place where the planet's geological history is remarkably revealed. The territory holds evidence of over 400 million years of Earth's evolution, including traces of two ancient continents and a vanished ocean. Throughout the geopark, 42 geosites have been identified, offering insight into these transformations and deepening the understanding of our planet's formation.
The Terras de Cavaleiros Geopark area is integrated into the Natura 2000 Network and is part of the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, which underscores the importance of its diverse landscape. This landscape includes the Nogueira and Bornes mountain ranges, as well as the Sabor River valley. The site is an environment for vast biodiversity, harboring unique species of flora and fauna, making it an interesting place for nature observation.
For those wishing to explore the Geopark in depth, there are 24 marked pedestrian trails. These trails, totaling over 180 km, invite hikers to discover aspects of the local geology, nature, and landscape. It is possible, for example, to access areas of particular geological interest, such as Monte de Morais, through these well-defined routes.
In addition to its geological and natural heritage, the Terras de Cavaleiros Geopark preserves a strong cultural identity. As one traverses this territory, one observes the maintenance of traditions and customs that have shaped the lives of communities over the centuries. This cultural dimension complements the visitor experience, providing contact with the region's human legacy.
