Located in Miranda do Douro, the Douro International Biological Station is situated in a natural border area between Portugal and Spain. It is located in the heart of the Douro International Natural Park, an area renowned for its impressive river landscapes, characterized by imposing gorges.
Its location provides direct access to the most spectacular section of the river, characterized by vertical cliffs which, due to their grandeur, earn it the designation of "European Grand Canyon". It is a starting point for observing the geological and natural uniqueness of this region.
The International Biological Station (IBS) was created with the aim of promoting the research and conservation of ecosystems and species present in this cross-border area. Since its foundation in 2002, and with official ratification in 2006 by the Portuguese and Spanish governments, the IBS has been a reference entity in the protection of local biodiversity.
Its projects and initiatives contribute to the knowledge and preservation of the natural heritage of Douro Internacional, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in this cause.
The site offers a unique way to explore the nature of Douro Internacional aboard its school-ship. This vessel was designed to provide an immersive experience in the landscape, featuring a climate-controlled panoramic glass roof and outdoor terraces that allow all passengers to observe the imposing cliffs and the wildlife inhabiting them.
During the activity, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the fauna, flora, and geology of the spectacular riverbanks. The school-ship is equipped with technology supporting research, such as an onboard laboratory and external microphones for capturing wildlife sounds, making the experience informative and interactive, culminating in a didactic exhibition on the IBS's species recovery programs.
Throughout its existence, the International Biological Station has been distinguished with various awards, reflecting its commitment to ecotourism and conservation. Among the recognitions, it stands out for the First National Tourism Award and the Parliament's Medal of Merit in Portugal.
These distinctions underscore the IBS's role in promoting responsible tourism and valuing the natural resources of the Douro International region, contributing to its protection and dissemination.
