The Bísaro Pig Interpretive Centre is located in the town of Vinhais, within the Arrabalde area. Its position offers easy access within the village, being situated a few meters from the walls that once delimited the old castle, suggesting proximity to the historical heart of the settlement.
This centre is housed in a historic building, known as Solar do Conde Sarmento. The construction dates from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, exhibiting characteristics of stately architecture. Commissioned by João Ferreira Sarmento (Morais Pimentel), a prominent figure born in Vinhais, the manor house is distinguished by its Coat of Arms. This element, a quartered shield, reveals the origins of families such as the Pimentel, Sarmento, Ferreira, and Morais, endowing the building with remarkable symbolic and historical richness.
The centre proposes an in-depth discovery of the world of the pig and cured meats, with a particular focus on the Bísara breed, so characteristic of the region. The exhibition covers the history and cultural significance of the pig, from its birth and rearing to the traditional slaughter and subsequent meat processing. Objects, images, and narratives are presented that illustrate the various uses of the meat and the studies that contribute to understanding the quality of local products.
A visit to the Bísaro Pig Interpretive Centre is designed to be an experience rich in knowledge and interaction.
